Throwing Muses landing in Berlin came as a bit of a surprise to many I’m sure.
So we welcome to town one of the most incredible indie guitar bands of all time fronted by the imposing personality of Kristin Hersh. Through several influential albums from Hunkpapa to The Real Ramona to University, Throwing Muses carried the banner of indie guitar music you could equally get angsty to in your bedroom and then bust your dance moves to on the dancefloor of your local indie disco with all the other longhaired indie kids…aahh, the 90s, such simple times.
This is Not Too Soon from The Real Ramona, just before Tanya Donnelly left:
Hersh along with Dave Narcizo and Bernard Georges have been the stable line-up of the ‘Muses since 1992 after Tanya Donnelly left to be awesome for The Breeders and then to form the incredible Belly. So, Throwing Muses calibre had plenty to live up to and the trio have lived up to their reputation amply over the past twenty or so years. The records might have been few but the quality is immense. 2003 saw another self-titled record surprise the crap out of everyone and even featured Tanya Donnelly on backing vocals and awed many with it’s sheer power. With nine solo albums to her name aswell as an album with her other side band, 50 Foot Wave, Throwing Muses continue to blaze a trail, quite literally, it’s gonna be loud, intense and damn I wish I still had long hair to throw around.
This is an example of the intensity they managed to maintain as a trio throughout the 90s rush of crappy brit pop nonsense, Bright Yellow Gun off University(1995) was an instant dancefloor filler:
